By Catherine Piercy A Victoria's Secret catalog has more to gawk at than D-cup cleavage and flat abs: The lush, voluminous hair seems almost as unattainable as those superhuman bodies. In real life, most women employ an arsenal of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products in the quest for gravity-defying hair -- a self-defeating strategy, according to experts. "Overcompensating with heavy conditioners and hair spray only weighs strands down under a layer of residue," says Jessica Simpson's hairstylist Ken Paves. "When it comes to volume, less really is more." He believes that hair height should have some relationship to its length (a short cut shouldn't be too high) to avoid looking bubble-like -- and that teasing should be confined strictly to the crown of the head. The pairing of bangs with teased hair can be hazardous, too (Paves likes them soft and swept to the side). "The goal is to keep the hair looking full, natural, and smooth," he says. "There's a reason Brigitte Bardot is an icon and Peg Bundy is not."
