Aug. 24--Addison and RedMoon Inc. formally launched Addison's citywide wireless network Tuesday, offering residents, workers and visitors an easy way to get onto the Internet anywhere inside the city.
The launch of the wireless system puts Addison is in the forefront among U.S. cities by sponsoring a wireless network from city limit to city limit that all residents and visitors can use.
"This is really an exciting moment," Addison Mayor Joe Chow said. "We are the first city in Texas to be wireless and one of the few in the United States."
A growing number of cities are looking to do the same thing to make sure their residents have access to broadband, and they're tired of waiting for private companies to provide the service.
Some cities own and operate their systems, such as Lompoc, Calif., and Chaska and Moorhead, Minn.
