Aug. 24--Pickups, SUVs and minivans will be required to get slightly better gas mileage under new federal fuel standards announced Tuesday, though the savings are likely to amount to less than a gallon a week per truck.
The proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards -- the first significant changes to the rules in 30 years -- would force light trucks to increase their fuel economy from the current average of 21 miles per gallon to a best-case 24 mpg by 2011.
Motorists who drive an average of 15,000 miles per year would save about 51 gallons of gas annually under the proposed standard. Cars were not included in the proposed changes and still must maintain an average of 27.5 mpg. Large SUVs such as the Hummer and heavy-duty pickups, some of which are used for commercial purposes, also were excluded.
