Aug. 23--Jim Turner, who built the nation's largest independent soft drink bottler largely through the Dr Pepper brand, now plans to work with another iconic Texas soft drink.
The former chief executive of Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group said Monday that he is negotiating to buy Waco-based Big Red Inc., a private company that sells the concentrate to make the seriously sweet, candy-apple-colored Big Red soft drink.
"It's not a done deal, but we're far down the road," said Mr. Turner in a telephone interview during a break from meetings. "I've always been on the bottling side. Now I'm going to be on the concentrate side, and I'm really excited."
