In England, Joseph Pilates, a sickly youth who wanted better health and a stronger physique, developed a movement system that stretched, strengthened and balanced the body. When he moved to New York City in the late 1920s, his system, known simply as Pilates (Pi-lah-tees), caught on, primarily with dancers.

Pilates works to retrain core muscles to establish better posture, relieve stress, reduce joint discomfort and stiffness, and improve mobility and balance.
