I hate to break the news to you, but department-store makeup artists are there to sell makeup. The nice thing is, you can use them to get a new look by buying what you need. Here's how: * Know your rights -- and obligations. There are three kinds of services. The most common is the refresher to update your look. This doesn't require an appointment or an obligation to buy. The second is the lesson -- where the artist does half your face and teaches you to do the other half. You should make an appointment for this and will be expected to buy some products. The last is the application, when you get your face done before a special event. You actually don't have to pay for this; stores know you will probably buy a product or two. They also like to have bodies in the seats at the counter.
