Anxiety Relief
Anxiety Relief An herb believed for more than two millennia to reduce anxiety can in fact make people calmer, British scientists have demonstrated in a preliminary study. Psychologist David O. Kennedy and his colleagues at the University of Northumbria studied the effects of lemon balm, an herb in the mint family, on mild stress in 18 physically and psychologically healthy people. On several occasions, the volunteers engaged in challenging tasks that raised their stress levels and worsened their moods. When they took 600 milligrams of lemon-balm extract an hour before this test, they felt significantly calmer than they did when they took a placebo. Although they became less alert after consuming the lemon balm, as happens with mild sedatives, their performance was unaffected. The researchers hope further investigation will show whether lemon balm, which caused no reported side effects, "might provide a safer alternative to prescribed drugs" in treating mild psychological stress.
