Caffeine Addiction As little as one cup of coffee a day can cause caffeine addiction, and so can two to three daily soft drinks, according to a report in Psychopharmacology. When study subjects gave up that amount of caffeine, they suffered withdrawal symptoms in 12 to 24 hours. The reactions, which included headache, drowsiness, bad mood, lack of concentration, and flulike symptoms, were most intense between one and two days but lasted up to nine days, and 13 percent of people took time off from work as a result. It takes only three to five days of caffeine consumption for this dependence to occur, says Roland R. Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, who coauthored the report. Average daily intake in the United States is about 280 milligrams, the amount found in one to two cups of coffee or three to five cans of caffeinated soda.

Although the researchers were unclear about the specific traits that make a voice appealing, the raters tended to agree on which voices they liked.
