Lisa Sasson, a professor of nutrition at New York University, tackled Lichota's and Varner's portion control and snacking, while Manhattan weight-loss physician Howard Shapiro addressed low-calorie food substitutions for Schmidt. Shapiro says, "Diets don't work because someone's telling you what and when to eat. That leads to feelings of deprivation. When you reduce your calorie intake while still eating foods you like, you're less inclined to return to your old habits."
