Food and Whine
As someone guilty of throwing good eating rules out the window at Christmas, I appreciated Judith Newman's witty and entertaining guide to preventing holiday weight gain ["Holiday Spread," December]. Her excellent advice, combined with funny anecdotes, had me laughing and, most important, looking forward to a Christmas of great food -- barring the extra pounds. Maybe a dose of those Rockette-style exercises ["Rockette Science," December] might help, too! Hermia Lee Melbourne, Australia
Judith Newman wrote that a viable alternative for getting rid of holiday party leftovers was to "give everything to the dog." I realize that this was meant to be funny, but it was an irresponsible joke. Many foods such as turkey, grapes, and raisins can cause intestinal upset in dogs, onions can be toxic, and chocolate can even cause death. Perhaps if one is that desperate to get rid of leftovers, the garbage disposal is a better option. Yvette Sajem Atlanta
I was astounded by Judith Newman's comment that she was "not fat enough for Lane Bryant, but feeling a little tight in my thin clothes." Well, I am fat enough for Lane Bryant, and I am disappointed in Allure. I read Newman's tips for us "fat girls" on how to not overeat during the holidays and found it tired and not the least bit funny. I buy your magazine to learn the latest in beauty, not to be insulted. Susan H. Raleigh, NC
