What would your mother think of that outfit? By Jeffrey Slonim
even stratospherically famous stars have one thing in common with the rest of us: mothers who tell it like it is. At the Baby Phat, Imitation of Christ, Tommy Hilfiger, and Marc Jacobs fashion shows and the premieres of Taxi and Shark Tale, we asked celebrities how the big boss would rate their clothes. Many predicted a scolding. "She would have told me I look like I've gone through my grandmother's trunk," said Shiva Rose McDermott. "She never goes for the vintage thing." Chloe Sevigny guessed her mother would think her shoes were "too clunky." Liya Kebede expected to hear, "Put something on -- you're naked." Not Julie Delpy: "My mother is a hippie. She would be like, 'You look so straight. Wear some feathers.'" Some moms haven't heard of tough love. "She'd be proud. I've got on a button-up shirt," beamed Ja Rule.
