Dieters' Perception Not every woman who sees images of models ends up disparaging her own body. In fact, some feel better about themselves, a study has found. When 92 women viewed magazine advertisements that featured thin models, nondieters among them suffered a dip in their appearance self-esteem. Dieters, however, felt more overall self-esteem. University of Toronto psychologist C. Peter Herman speculates that when women believe such images represent an impossible ideal, they're likely to feel a bit disappointed with their own bodies by comparison. But dieters instead tend to imagine attaining such a body. "It is this inclination to believe in the possibility of self-improvement that underlies the dieting enterprise," Herman points out.
