Who? Ashlee Simpson. What? The January cover of Allure, shot by Michael Thompson. When? October 22. She flew to New York City a few days earlier to rehearse for her now-infamous performance on Saturday Night Live. Why? The 20-year-old's album, Autobiography, went platinum, and her MTV reality series, The Ashlee Simpson Show, has made her as well-known as her sister, Jessica. It's in the Bag: Simpson arrived with her mother, Tina; a friend; and an MTV crew. She wore a newsboy cap, a tweed jacket by Marc Jacobs, a Chloe sweater, jeans, and cowboy boots. All the women at the shoot stared longingly at her Fendi bag, which she had borrowed for the MTV Video Music Awards last year. Simpson was supposed to return it, but when she and the bag got masses of press, Fendi let her keep it. Miss Popularity: Between shots, Simpson sent text messages to friends. Two preteen fans, Perry McCarthy and Alexa Manley, stopped by with an Allure editor and got autographs from the star. When the girls asked if Simpson and singer Ryan Cabrera were still a couple, Simpson's mother answered for her: "Sometimes they are; sometimes they aren't. It just depends on the day." Bull Run: Simpson needed a boost midway through the shoot, so she drained three cans of sugar-free Red Bull. Monster's Ball: Simpson emerged from her dressing room in a black gown and walked like a zombie, saying, "I am the girl from The Ring." The Mother Load: Tina Simpson did manage to duck out of the shoot for an hour and return with four pairs of shoes from Jeffrey New York, proving that power shopping is genetic. -- ...
