Stress Eating
people regularly turn to food when they're feeling pressure, but women may be prone to overeating even after a stressful event is over. Researchers led by Laura Cousino Klein, a psychologist at Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania, asked 62 people to solve math problems. Some of them were subjected to loud noise that they could turn off if they desired (although no one did), while others were not given that option. The rest worked in silence. Afterward, women who exhibited the most lingering frustration -- consistently, those who had had no control over the noise -- ate twice as many snacks as women who were not frustrated. Surprisingly, men did not react to tension by overeating, Klein says. During times of stress, she advises women to stock up on healthful foods and eat in a relaxing environment.
Evening Cereal
For people who tend to snack at night, cereal can satisfy cravings and lead to weight loss. In a study at Wayne State University in Detroit, night snackers were asked to eat one cup of unsweetened cold cereal with 2/3 cup low-fat milk at least 90 minutes after dinner, for a month. (The cereals had 100 to 135 calories, two to six grams of protein, and 23 to 32 grams of carbohydrates.)
