Attention-Deficit Shoppers
Attention-Deficit Shoppers Nearly everyone experiences occasional shopping malaise, but some people who hate to shop may suffer from a psychological problem. According to a study in Psychology & Marketing, frustration and difficulty making decisions in stores are common symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder (ADD). Carol Kaufman-Scarborough of Rutgers University and Judy Cohen of Rider University, both in New Jersey, surveyed 46 women and 16 men diagnosed with ADD. Nearly 92 percent reported frequent impulse shopping (sometimes resulting in accidental duplicate purchases), and nearly 62 percent routinely failed to accomplish their shopping goals, giving up and leaving without buying desired items. People with ADD often feel overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and choices in stores, and their distractibility makes them easily diverted by sales and specials, the researchers say. The study subjects reported that making shopping lists, visiting stores at off-peak times, avoiding superstores, and remaining loyal to particular stores and brands helped to keep them focused.
