Anti-Cancer Checklist
Anti-Cancer Checklist Following certain guidelines reduces the risk of cancer, according to a 12-year study. Women who observed one or none of nine recommendations from the American Institute for Cancer Research had a 35 percent higher rate of cancer than those who followed at least six of them, as well as a 42 percent higher rate of dying from it. The nine guidelines are not smoking, having a body mass index of less than 25, gaining no more than 11 pounds since age 18, getting daily moderate and weekly vigorous exercise, eating five or more servings of vegetables and fruits daily, eating seven or more daily servings of complex carbohydrates, limiting processed foods and refined sugar, having no more than one daily alcoholic drink for women, eating a maximum of three ounces of red meat a day, limiting fatty foods, and limiting salt. James Cerhan, an epidemiologist at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, adds that avoiding secondhand smoke and sun exposure may reduce risk even more.
