Sometimes he doesn't even know what he wants -- but if you're thoughtful and remember that the gesture counts more than the price tag, you'll be fine. (And if all else fails, there's always a Jack Spade bag.) * Analyze him. Find out what he wishes he could do if he had the time, and give him the tools to get going. Buy him a miter saw and a level if he has always wanted to try carpentry. If he's an aspiring writer, a cool journal. A bird-watcher, hell, I don't know. The point is, encourage him to do his thing. * Back to basics. Socks, underwear, gloves, scarves, and wallets are not cop-outs. It's better to get a guy something he needs than something he doesn't want. I have friends who think I'm "creative," so I end up with hand-painted ties ready to be incinerated. Kate once gave me Brooks Brothers boxer shorts, and I was totally happy. * Let him choose. I'd rather get a gift certificate than the wrong brand of golf clubs. Record, book, and sporting-goods stores offer them. I love hobby stores -- the places that sell model airplanes, Essex rockets, and remote-control boats. I don't know a man who wouldn't give his right arm to race slot cars and re-enter boyhood for a day. * ...
