Lose the liquid liner. A soft pencil warmed between the fingers creates a look that's perfectly imprecise.

The Big Picture

The Big Picture Eyeliner doesn't work and play well with others. Combine it with bright red lipstick and a lot of blush, and you might as well throw on some hot pants and fishnets, too. But when it's worn with too little makeup, "you look like Uncle Fester on The Addams Family," warns makeup artist Maria Verel. The happy medium is to balance it with healthy-looking skin (a little bronzer or highlighter, nothing too chalky) and pretty, pale nude or neutral lips. Pati Dubroff also likes the combination of glossy colored lips and liner that isn't black -- for instance, bronze liner with sheer fuchsia or berry on the mouth. And, adds Dubroff, "you definitely want mascara, to accentuate the liner and give it some form."
