Evening
Plenty of flat shoes glide with ease across lawn parties and subway grates, but few can hold their own with a cocktail dress. To do so, the shoes have to be delicate, slightly bare, and nothing at all like a loafer. "Just be sure to stand up straight, and carry yourself the way you would in heels," advises stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who works with Kristin Davis and Calista Flockhart. * Flats can look too prim and prissy for evening unless they show a little skin. Mules, slingbacks, and d'Orsays (which cover only the toes and the heels) or anything with toe cleavage work well. * Silver, gold, and metallic blue and pink are great for a cocktail party and can also be worn every day. "Metallics are the ultimate neutral," Stewart says. "They match everything, but they're not boring." * Anyone accustomed to heels may find that flats bring their own set of discomforts. If your feet aren't used to bearing weight over so much surface area, blisters are likely to form on your heels and soles. Foot specialist Rock Positano of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City recommends a little Vaseline on the heels and other trouble spots to prevent the friction that causes blisters.
