Val Garland: Makeup Artis
Val Garland thrives under pressure. "I love the stress of the runway, of making the impossible possible," says the London makeup artist. "Before one show for [Alexander] McQueen, a fire broke out. There were six-foot flames, but we had worked so hard that we wanted madly for people to see it. It took ten minutes to put the fire out, but the show did go on." Garland survived the heat to become one of the busiest backstage artists, working for Chloe, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Emanuel Ungaro. She recently made up Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott, Linda Evangelista, and Chloe Sevigny for M.A.C.'s new Viva Glam campaign. "Val's a geeeeenius," gushes model Amanda Moore. "She's so inventive." Indeed, Garland has played with every trend, including the theatrical (circus clowns at McQueen) and the surreal (autumn leaves around the eyes at Ungaro). But her true signatures are perfect skin and fluffy lashes: "Give me flawless skin and mascara, and I'm happy."
