Word of mouth
Party Poopers
It used to be just hair and makeup. Then came pre-party teeth whitening and spray-tanning. Now, believe it or not, the latest de rigueur treatment before Hollywood events is a colonic. Actresses and industry insiders are getting the procedure -- where the colon is irrigated with water and the contents emptied via a plastic tube -- so that their stomachs seem flatter and their dresses more flattering. "In the last six months everyone has started doing it -- before awards ceremonies these places are booked back-to-back with A-listers," says a television producer who believes the colonics she gets twice a month not only make her look slimmer, but help eliminate toxins from her body. But most experts contend that claims like these are a crock of -- well, you know. "Colonics empty the colon, so yes, they can give you a flatter belly for an evening," says James George, clinical instructor of gastroenterology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, "but no flatter than if you just allow nature to take its course. And those toxins people talk about don't actually enter the body." Bottom Line: Hollywood vanity has reached new heights -- or new lows -- with preparty colonics.
