Cheat Sheet
1 Wash hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove product buildup, which can prevent conditioner from penetrating the hair shaft. 2 Rinse thoroughly. If hair feels greasy or slippery, lather again and rinse well, making sure strands are free of shampoo and styling-product residue. 3 Gently squeeze excess water from the hair with an absorbent towel, but avoid rubbing or tousling it, which can tangle and break the hair. 4 Rub a quarter-size blob of deep conditioner between the palms, and use your fingers to rake it through the hair, depositing more on the ends. If you have fine hair, use a little less, and only slick it on hair below the ears. 5 Without yanking the hair, pin it into a loose bun or twist, then cover it with a shower cap and a warm, damp towel to trap heat. 6 After at least 15 minutes, remove the cap, undo the twist, and rinse hair thoroughly. 7 Squeeze hair with a towel, blotting out excess water. 8 Tackle knots at the ends first with a wide-tooth comb. Then run it from roots to ends. On reverse: Aveda Deep Penetrating Hair Revitalizer.

Deep conditioners can leave the hair silky and supple -- or just plain stringy. Alberto VO5 Total Hair Recovery (3) has all three. Garnier Fructis Fortifying Deep Conditioner (4) uses fruit acids that penetrate the hair shaft, bringing moisturizing ingredients with them straight to the cortex (albertovo5.com; garnierfructis.com). * Women with fine hair should look for deep conditioners with weightless silicone, like Kerastase Masquintense for fine hair (5) (877-748-8357). * Those with very coarse hair require heavier moisturizers, like the mango- and sunflower-seed oils blended into PhytoSpecific Intense Nutrition Mask (7) (phytospecific.com). * L'Oreal Vive Color-Care Masque (6) contains UV filters that remain on the hair after the conditioner is rinsed out, protecting hair from the sun ...
