Who? Natalie Portman. What? The August cover of Allure, shot by Michael Thompson. Where? At Lux Studio in Chelsea, a 45-minute drive from her house on Long Island. When? May 4. Portman had just returned home for a well-deserved break after volunteering with the Foundation for International Community Assistance in Uganda for two days and filming Closer with Jude Law and Julia Roberts in London. Why? The 23-year- old stars as a pathological liar who is also epileptic in this month's Garden State. Pret-a-Portman: Portman arrived wearing a long-sleeved gray cotton T-shirt, a purple Patagonia vest, jeans, and pink Ugg boots. The Breakfast Club: Lukas Haas, whom Portman met while filming Mars Attacks! in 1996, stopped by the studio for breakfast. While Portman got made up, Haas ate a danish and chatted with the crew. Making a Statement: A vegetarian since she was eight, Portman does not wear fur or leather (the Uggs are synthetic). She declined to put on one jacket until the fashion assistant cut off its leather buttons. Attached to her pink cloth purse was a campaign button that said, "It's Up To the Women: Vote John Kerry." Later, Gator: Portman passed on the catered lunch of grilled chicken, spinach salad, and couscous. Instead, she asked her publicist to go to a nearby deli for three large bottles of orange and lemon Gatorade. Sitting Pretty: Between shots, Portman waited patiently in a robe, calling her parents and weighing in on the latest teen movies: "I saw Mean Girls Friday night, and it was amazing." Of ...
