Simple ways to blast calories outside the gym
BE WEIGHED DOWN. "Wear two-pound ankle weights while you clean the house, or under pants at the office," Barrett says. "They may not be the most aesthetically pleasing accessories, but they help you burn approximately 100 extra calories per hour." It will also strengthen and stretch leg muscles and help tone abdominal muscles. SIT AROUND. If you work in a place that would not be disrupted by it, replace your desk chair with a large exercise ball. "It will force you to sit up straight and work your core to maintain balance, it strengthens your quads each time you sit down and stand up, and you can use it to sneak in stretches and exercises throughout the day," Barrett says. SHELVE THE STILETTOS (OCCASIONALLY). The more comfortable the shoes, the more likely you'll be to take the stairs. "It doesn't have to be that look from the '80s -- nylons with tube socks and Reeboks," Barrett says. "Get some trail shoes and wear them with pants, or some Puma slip-ons with a skirt." PICK UP THE PACE. Try to live with vigor. Imitate someone who has a lot of energy. Walk faster. Fidget and pace. "Overbook yourself a little, and you're likely to hustle and rise to the occasion," Barrett says.
