Three easy steps to zap and cover a pimple. By Cara Birnbaum
It seems to pop out of nowhere at the worst possible time -- and almost always takes grown women by surprise. It shouldn't, since the occasional honking zit is so common. The big challenge is to resist the urge to blast the blemish with scrubs and drying solutions. Once a woman passes 20, she requires gentle products: an antibacterial salicylic-acid wash to unclog pores and relieve redness and a benzoyl-peroxide-and-sulfur spot ointment to kill the bacteria that cause the blemish. Apply the products no more than twice a day, "otherwise you'll get crusting, which can slow healing and increase the chance of leaving a red spot for weeks," warns New Orleans dermatologist Mary P. Lupo. And remember not to prod, poke, or pop. "Adult pimples tend to start far underground and almost never come to a head, so squeezing them will intensify the swelling," says San Francisco Bay Area dermatologist Katie Rodan. "They're mafia zits."
