Drugstore Cowgirls

makeup

There's an inverse relationship between price and daring. "At the drugstore, I buy anything that looks cool but I don't want to spend too much money on," Gleicher says. "You can try the new blue eye shadow for practically nothing." * Lash Longer Everyone, and we mean everyone, uses Maybelline New York Great Lash Mascara, but it isn't the only one that rich women covet. "I get complimented on my lashes everywhere I go," Gleicher says. "It's the L'Oreal [Double Extend] mascara that's white on one side, black on the other. I did a shoot and the makeup artist put it on me. I was like, Are you crazy? -- because I was addicted to Yves Saint Laurent Faux Cils. But now I love it because it makes my lashes look longer." * Define and Line When it comes to eyeliner, Brooks -- who did her own wedding-day makeup after getting a lesson at the Nars counter -- mixes upstairs and downstairs: "You know the black Maybelline [Expert Eyes Twin Brow & Eye Pencil] liner in the red pencil? I use that on the inside of my top lid for definition. Then, next to the lashes on the top lid, I line with Nars in a different color. Who needs to pay a lot for black liner?" * Bat an Eye Fashion designer Shoshanna Lonstein-Gruss is known for her flirty, wide-eyed look -- and it's available to anyone with $5. "I buy false eyelashes at Ricky's in New York," she says. "I chop them up into little strips. They're not expensive, so I don't feel bad about ruining a pair." * Curve Ball Schifter swears by her basic eyelash curler. "I use the really cheap CoverGirl one -- it gives you the best curve," she says. * Getting Cheeky Even flush women use cheap blush -- and if she's trying to cram it into a tiny evening bag, Schifter packs L'Oreal Blush Delice in Strawberry Tart. "It's the size of a large postage stamp. No fancy brand makes one so tiny," she says, adding that she loves the micro-brush. "I had two, but I ended up giving one to someone in the ladies' room at Cipriani." * Lip Lock The rich are different, but their lip balms are often the same. Griscom uses plain old Chapstick, while Serena Boardman prefers Neutrogena's Lip Moisturizer SPF 15 for the beach and skiing. Then there's Amanda Brooks. After the birth of her first child, she was using Lansinoh nipple cream, "and I realized it made the best lip gloss. It's supershiny, thick, and stays on. Every makeup artist who's seen it on me has gone out and bought it. Sometimes I add color to it." * Mouth moves Chain clothing stores are famous among uptowners for offering stylish makeup colors at ...
