Temptation Island
Sunrise, Sunset
"If you keep it sheer, you can definitely wear colors like ocean blue or tangerine to the office," says makeup artist Robin Siegel. The lip glosses work for virtually any time or place, but most makeup artists recommend moderation on the eyes for day. Keep shadow on the lids (not on brow bones), focus mascara on just the top lashes, and lay off the thick eyeliner. Instead of pencil, makeup artist Maria Verel dabs a little purple, blue, or green shadow between the lower lashes with a damp Q-tip. "The idea is more of a watercolor whisper than a bowlful of jelly beans." Colors that harmonize work best in the world of nine to five, but after hours, go for contrast: green on the eyes with pink or coral on the mouth, lavender with tangerine, aqua with magenta. Or play with color combinations on the eyes, like "a wash of purple shadow with a bright blue eye pencil," says makeup artist Pati Dubroff. She also likes adding colored mascara at night. "A bright blue mascara can be really fantastic with lavender eye shadow. I like to do a basecoat of black and then apply color on the upper lashes." Another way to go at night is not with a lot more color, but "with a lot more black," says makeup artist Scott Andrew. When the sun goes down, ramp up a bright blue or lavender shadow with layers of black mascara and eyeliner. (And don't forget the gardenia in your hair.)

"The idea is to look voluptuous," Verel says, "like a gorgeous, juicy piece of fruit that's just been opened." * Don't try to match bright blue or green shadow to eye color, says Bobbi Brown, because "any eye shadow that competes with your natural eye color wins." (Translation: If your eyes are blue, wear contrasting mango or green shadow.) * Too many colors on the eyes can look clownish, especially for beginners. Instead, try using the same color in varying intensities, says makeup artist Dick Page. For instance, start with an intense blue at the lash lines, bright aqua ...
