Two Faced
When I do a fashion show, I usually have to create one look for all the models. But for Helmut Lang, I tried a new approach. I designed two versions of smoky eyes: light gold on blonde models and dark copper on brunettes. We're not talking about a chalk and cheese difference, as we say in Britain: The makeup for the brunettes and the blondes was similar, but with each, I enhanced the girl's natural coloring. And I kept it simple. The models at Helmut Lang don't walk on a raised runway, and the light is natural, so they don't need a lot of makeup. If I used a lot of foundation and powder, the audience would see it -- and probably not like it.
