Face-Tanner
Get glowing -- no streaks, lines, spots, or orange tint required
Self-tanner is a little like red wine -- once you realize you've overdone it, it's too late. And no one is immune: Just look at Charlize Theron, who accepted her Oscar looking nearly as golden-bronze as her statuette, or Sting, who looked like he was dipped in furniture stain. On the face, self-tanner is especially precarious. "If you put on too much or don't blend it properly, you'll look like you stuck your face in mud," says makeup artist Scott Barnes, who bronzes Jennifer Lopez's skin. A formula designed for the face is best, since it's lighter in texture and color, and less likely to clog pores than one meant for the body. Tinted lotions also help by showing any missed spots or dark streaks while they can still be fixed. "Work in thin layers," says makeup artist Virginia Young. "And bring it down the neck and bustline, so you don't get a masklike effect." Done the right way, a faux glow on the face can look intoxicating -- without the pumpkinhead hangover.
