Mikale Lichota, April Joy Varner, and Kate Schmidt don't need to dust off their sneakers -- all three exercise regularly -- but their routines were getting a little stale. To figure out how to add inspiration to perspiration, Allure called in the experts. Fred DeVito and Elisabeth Halfpapp at Exhale Spa introduced the strength and flexibility moves known as Core Fusion to Lichota's twice-weekly runs. Chris Uy of Sports Club/LA in New York City and Shawna Cordell of Shawna Cordell Fitness increased the stretching, weight, and cardio portion of Varner's and Schmidt's workouts. Still required: willpower as steely as their newly sculpted muscles.

FITNESS HISTORY: "Before, I ran between five and ten miles three days a week. I hated strength training -- I'd lift weights once a week to stay toned, but I never saw great results." FITNESS RX: "Mikale was focusing on aerobic exercise, but without building muscle tissue to burn additional calories, the results were limited," says DeVito, her trainer. "Elisabeth and I led her through a series of positions to isolate different muscle groups, using her own body weight as resistance. Soon she'll burn more calories -- even at rest." THIRTY-DAY UPDATE: "I still run two or three times a week, but I also take at least two Core Fusion classes," Lichota says.
