Aug. 28--What separates Jose Canseco from a reverend's horse in Miami-Dade County?
About 50 blocks.
Jose Canseco Street, as the white letters on the leaf-green background proudly declare, runs along 16th Street between Southwest 97th and 107th avenues. Brooker Street, named after the horse that the late Rev. James Bolton was so fond of, is a stretch of Southwest 38th Avenue just south of U.S. 1.
In Liberty City and Opa-locka, several streets are named after prominent civil rights leaders who staged sit-ins and boycotts in the name of equality. In Little Havana and Coconut Grove, various streets bear the names of Cuban-American activists or fallen Vietnam War heroes.
As of June 23, there were 363 stretches of asphalt in Miami-Dade christened in honor of someone, dead or alive, native or foreign, famous or infamous.
