Jul. 27--Cingular Wireless still is running in first place as the biggest U.S. cellular company, but Verizon Wireless is getting ever closer in the rear-view mirror.
Trailing by 6.4 million customers a year ago, Verizon Wireless has cut that lead by a third, to 4.2 million as of June 30.
Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon Communications Inc. chairman and chief executive officer, chortled about his cellphone unit Tuesday when talking to analysts, calling Verizon Wireless "the top performing wireless company in the industry."
Analysts said Cingular's growth may have been slowed a bit as it's been occupied with the complex job of absorbing AT&T Wireless, a merger that received final approval in October 2004....
