Jul. 26--Commerce bank made a big splash when it opened a new branch in Chinatown, signing up more than 14,000 new accounts -- more than an average new Commerce branch gets in a year.
In the first 14 days ending this past Friday, the newly opened branch attracted lines that snaked around the corner, adding new customers at the rate of one every 41 seconds for the entire time the bank has been open.
"We have never seen anything like this," said Vernon Hill, Commerce's chairman and founder.
