Jul. 26--The Ikea store at Dallas North Tollway and State Highway 121 in Frisco is set to open Aug. 3.
"When you go after big fish, you have to use big bait," said Jim Gandy, president of Frisco Economic Development Corp.
Some analysts question the need to grant tax incentives to giant retailers. They say such businesses always swim toward feeding grounds such as Frisco, where more than 70,000 residents have migrated since 1990.
Others contend that Ikea is so big, Frisco will easily cover its incentives and help keep the place a money magnet for years.
Ikea is huge, spawning more than 200 stores in 33 countries from its base in Sweden and reporting worldwide sales of $15.5 billion last year. Frisco's store, the second in Texas, will open Aug. 3.
And Mr. Gandy expects the immense blue box at Dallas North Tollway and State Highway 121 to generate $100 million in annual sales and waves of sales taxes that he said will wash away that $6.5...
