WASHINGTON -- Online communication with patients can ease physician workloads and help patients better manage their health, Dr. Paul Tang said at a health policy conference sponsored by Academy Health and Health Affairs.
For one thing, patients like having their own health information, such as test results, as well as additional resources, available online so that they can look at the information after an office visit, said Dr. Tang, who is chief medical information officer at the Palo Alto (Calif.) Medical Foundation. And there are times when giving patients self-management tools is the best way to treat a problem, he said.
