ORLANDO, FLA. -- Treatment with an oral endothelin receptor blocker resulted in healing of digital ulcers and clinical improvements in hand functionality in patients with scleroderma, Dr. Carol M. Black reported at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.
Endothelin is a potent vasoconstrictor that stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts and the deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, including collagen. It is overexpressed in the skin, lungs, and other tissues of patients with scleroderma.
