SAN FRANCISCO -- Drug resistance results in HIV infection can be difficult to interpret and often are not useful, Dr. Robert M. Grant said at a meeting on HIV management sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco.
Several factors, said Dr. Grant of the university's Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, conspire to diminish the utility of these tests:
* Poor adherence. No amount of characterization of the virus will produce a better virologic response if patients are not taking the drugs consistently....
