WASHINGTON -- Daily, year-round use of sunscreen and avoidance of spicy or hot foods and alcohol are critical for controlling rosacea, said Dr. Marianne N. O'Donoghue at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
"Sunburn is absolutely verboten" for patients who suffer from this erythematous disorder, which tends to focalize in the center of their face," said Dr. O'Donoghue of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
The prevalence of rosacea is high among light-complexioned people of Celtic or Northern European heritage, she said. More than 13 million Americans suffer from rosacea, according to the National Rosacea Society. Rosacea flare-ups can be triggered by foods and beverages that increase vasomotor dilation, such as coffee, spicy dishes, and even hot soups or hot-temperature drinks.
