STOWE, VT. -- Skin changes associated with dermatomyositis can hold clues to help manage the disease, but physicians dealing with the systemic condition too often "look through the skin, not at it," stated Dr. Richard D. Sontheimer.
For the most part, rheumatologists and internists continue to diagnose dermatomyositis (DM) using the Bohan and Peter classification system that focuses primarily on muscle involvement. This system recommends five diagnostic criteria for DM, four of which address muscle inflammation. The fifth criterion is the presence of hallmark cutaneous features.
