WASHINGTON -- Alopecia has become almost epidemic in black women, the result of hairstyles that pull too tightly on the scalp and harsh chemical treatments that damage the hair shaft and follicles, Dr. Susan C. Taylor said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.
