COLUMBUS, OHIO -- A new classification and evaluation system for cicatricial alopecia could help dermatologists master the hair disorder's sometimes difficult diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Wilma F. Bergfeld said at the annual meeting of the Ohio Dermatological Association.
Dr. Bergfeld and her colleagues at a workshop of the North American Hair Research Society formed a working classification of cicatricial alopecia's subtypes and recommended evaluations that are necessary to diagnose and treat the disease.
The underlying nature of cicatricial, or scarring, alopecia may be lymphocytic, neutrophilic, a mix of these two, or nonspecific, according to the classification (J. Am. Acad. Dermatol. 48[1]:103-10, 2003).
