After all, a portable yet practical skin-care regimen can make the difference between parched skin and dark circles and an enviably dewy, what-flight? glow.
Manhattan dermatologist Lisa Airan, M.D., should know: She's on a plane every other weekend to see her boyfriend in Toronto; she regularly attends dermatologic conferences all over the U.S., and takes annual ski trips to Aspen and yoga and wind-surfing expeditions to Hawaii. Airan cites dehydration-the result of high altitudes and recycled airplane air-as the chief culprit behind dull post-flight complexions. To ensure that she steps off each flight looking as fresh-faced as possible (good skin is her business, after all), Airan follows a few self-imposed rules: drink lots of water; skip the cocktails ("Alcohol is really dehydrating"); avoid salty snacks (she grabs a sandwich from Balthazar instead). She stocks her Vuitton carry-on with Prada's pint-size lip balms ("perfect for travel, since they're individually packaged") and an SPF-enriched moisturizer-especially important if you're sitting on the "sunny side of the plane." But Airan's most treasured beauty secret-her iPod-has nothing to do with skin. "You'll arrive much calmer, which helps you look good when you get off the plane," she says.
