Some 2,750 Albuquerque TVI students who live outside the school's taxation district will pay more than their classmates to attend school beginning in spring 2005.
The plan approved Tuesday means that within a year, out-of-district students could see their tuition go up by as much as 18 percent.
Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute board members said they approved the higher out-of-district tuition rate Tuesday to answer criticism from some Rio Rancho taxpayers.
"It's not an easy decision for me to deal with," board member Carmie Toulouse said before the panel voted 7-0 in favor of the plan. "Circumstances have forced us into this."
TVI's taxation district includes most of Bernalillo County and parts of Sandoval County, including Corrales and Rio Rancho south of Northern Boulevard.
Residents in northern Rio Rancho pay no taxes to TVI but can attend the school at no additional cost. That has irked some taxpayers in south Rio Rancho.
