Millions of boys have dreamed of growing up to be Batman, but Christian Bale wasn't one of them. "It's weird," he says about playing the Caped Crusader. "I never read the comic when I was young, and now I have nine-year-old kids coming up to me crying, 'Are you Batman? Can you fly?' And I have to correct them because Batman can't fly."
Maybe not, but Bale's own career is soaring. Batman Begins marks his boldest attempt at blockbuster filmmaking, even if he's not sure he'll enjoy the worldwide fame. This is an actor who pointedly avoids the trappings of stardom. When we meet at a Santa Monica beachfront hotel, he parks his pickup truck on the street and clearly doesn't notice whether he's being noticed (unlike his friend Ewan McGregor, who quite visibly saunters by).
Many in Hollywood were surprised to see the 31-year-old Bale don those bat ears.
