The boxy canvas tote has come a long way since L.L. Bean introduced the original in a fall 1944 catalog. Believe it or not, Bean's Ice Carrier was built to carry blocks of ice from car to ice chest (and cost $3 postpaid). It
reappeared in the sixties as the Boat and Tote, intended, as the name implies, mostly for salty pursuits-but it's been proving its mass appeal ever since, showing up in chic locales as numerous as its many color and size incarnations.
