A provocative new study conducted by the Mayo Clinic suggests that many incidents of unexplained drownings may be the result of a failure in the heart's electrical system because of a genetic defect. By applying lessons from the Human Genome Project, geneticists at the Rochester, Minn., lab have identified what they believe are defects in a gene called "RyR2," which cause malfunctions in the heart's electrical system.
