Jun. 28--The final three suburban Indianapolis counties voted Monday on whether to help pay for a new football stadium for the Indianapolis Colts, as Hamilton and Hendricks counties approved a food-and-beverage tax but Morgan County became the only one to reject it.
Four counties -- Boone, Hancock, Shelby and Johnson -- previously had approved the 1 percent tax, which also will help expand the Indiana Convention Center.
And in Marion County, which already had a 1 percent food-and-beverage tax, the City-County Council has approved doubling that rate to 2 percent.
Hamilton County's estimated revenue from the tax is the greatest of all the suburban counties, at about $2.5 million a year. That county's council approved the tax 6-1 in front of a sparse crowd of about a dozen people, including Colts season ticket holder Larry Cronkleton of Noblesville.
