Dear Alex,

Last June I flew on a Star Alliance first class round-the-world (RTW) ticket using United, SIA, ANA and Thai Airways. My routing was London-New York-Chicago-Los Angeles-Tokyo Osaka-Manila-Singapore-London.

When I checked in at Heathrow I was asked if I wanted to join United's FFP Mileage Plus so I signed up for it there and then.

But when the statement arrived I noticed I had not been credited for three SIA sectors: Los Angeles-Tokyo, Manila-Singapore and Singapore-London.

United said it needed proof that I took the flights before it would credit the missing miles. I sent copies of the boarding passes (except for Los Angeles-Tokyo because the flight attendant pinned this to my coat for identification and I never …
