Its maker says that a surgical robot capable of maneuvering and positioning a laparoscope in response to a surgeon's voice could improve operating room efficiency and lower costs. The robot, touted as the latest advance in laparoscopy, is the AESOP 2000, manufactured by Computer Motion Inc., Santa Barbara, Calif. The company was granted FDA clearance for its latest product only in June. AESOP is an acronym for Automated Endoscopic System for Optimal Positioning. Computer Motion, a five-year-old privately held concern, says it is the first voice-controlled medical robot cleared by the agency for the O.R.
