As part of an earlier announced C$1 billion diversification into Canadian heavy oil and conventional natural gas development, Calgary-based Suncor Inc. last week announced plans for the first phase of a two-part project to develop its Burnt Lake heavy oil property in northeastern Alberta.

The company said it would use the Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process to extract the heavy oil at Burnt Lake.

Suncor and partner Amoco Canada Petroleum Co. Ltd. have working interests of 79% and 21%, respectively, in the project, whose first phase will cost an estimated C$22 million. Suncor is project operator.
